Acorus gramineus "Ogon" A striking evergreen grass with great yellow and green variegation. Only reaching about 1 foot in height, clump increasing slightly in diameter each year, this moisture lover is very well behaved in a garden setting, or as a pond marginal.
Amelopsis brevipedunculata More commonly known as variegated Porcelain Berry Vine. This bushy climber has amazing white splashed foliage, reminiscent of grape leaves in appearance. Very vigorous when happy, quick to cover your fence or arbor/ Although it's bloom is fairly insignificant, In late Summer/early Fall, the berries ripen to a clear porcelain blue and really set off the whole dazzling package. Easy to grow in sun with a well draining soil.
Amoracia rusticana variegata Or more commonly known as "Variegated Horseradish". This can be used as the plain green counterpart for culinary purposes, But once it dazzles you with it's amazing cream variegated leaves, you won't want to waste one single piece of it's precious root. (Usually takes the second year after transplant/root disturbance to show it's best variegation) 6" Pot $10.00
Aquilegia "Woodside Variegated" (Sold Out) This columbine has wonderful blue, short spurred blooms. The REAL eye catcher, however,... is definitely it's yellow and green splashed foliage! Does as well in partial shade as sun, and likes an evenly moist but well draining soil.
Brunnera macrophylla "Jack Frost" Words cannot describe the dazzling impact this plant can make in your beds. The large heart-shaped leaves actually look metallic, they are so heavily overlaid with silver frosting. Just wait until you see the fab foliage topped off by the intensely blue clusters of flowers in late Spring. Best accompanied by red foliage plants and deepest green, even black. Then this Brunnera really makes a statement! $10.00
Brunnera m. "Langtrees" A fabulous perennial forget-me-not with huge heart shaped leaves that are uniformly patterned with silvery-white spots about each leaf's edge. This Brunnera has the largest leaf of them all Best grown in an acidic soil with partial sun and good drainage. $10.00
Carex "Island Brocade" This medium height variegated grass remains evergreen even for me, in zone 5. Forms a nice tight clump, and will begin to spread out in it's 2nd or 3rd year. Needs a well draining soil and sun. This one is a very dramatic accent to any sun garden!
Commelina variegata This is an extremely rare plant. Technically, NOT a hardy perennial, but a prolific self sower who's progeny will also come up variegated. (Once you grow one of these plants out for an entire season, you will never be with out future generations, as long as you don't mulch heavily, covering up the seeds for next season's crop.) Foliage is dramatically striped with pure white and the electric blue blooms practically glow in contrast. Partial sun is best and a soil that does not get too dried out. 5" pot 10.00
Digitalis "Flashing Spires" (LIMITED) An evergreen, VARIEGATED Foxglove! This rare beauty has varying widths of cream streaking running down each glorious leathery leaf. Slender stalks arise from the basal rosettes of foliage, producing thick clusters of pendulous, creamy bell-shaped blooms. Easy to grow in acidic, evenly moist, well-draining soil with sun to partial shade. 5" pot $ 10.00
Duchesnia indica variegata The sweetest little alpine groundcover. In Spring it's leaves are intensely marked with white, but later fade to green with the heat of Summer. If given partial shade, it will retain it's variegation much further into the season. Rare!
Fallopia japonica Tri-Color Giant variegated Fleece Flower. And I DO mean GIANT! In my beds this beautiful monster gets about 8 feet tall, and in several years, will produce enough side shoots to be about 5 feet wide. Unlike the other Fallopias, this one tends to clump, not run. Meaning, It is not an invasive thug, in my experience. Dramatic architectural statement for the perennial bed. Gallon $15.00
Fallopia japonica variegata This dramatic foliage plant will always get oooos N ahhhhhhs from visitors. Although not as large of a plant as it's tri-color sister, it still has in-your-face drama with the brilliant white variegation, splashed and freckled wildly on each & every leaf. In late Summer the delicate blooms appear at the ends of it gracefully arched stalks, reminiscen of a white Astilbe bloom. I have grown this one for about 8 years now, with only a stray runner now & then. Partial sun and a damp acidic soil.
Forsythia "Golden Times" A dwarf variegated Forsythia with dark green leaves, edged by broad gold margins. Same delightful yellow blooms covering it's branches in earliest Spring. Sun and moist, but well-draining soil. Gallon $18.00
Forsythia "Fiesta" This dwarf, variegated version of our well-known Spring blooming shrub has the same cheery yellow blooms, but with intensely variegated foliage. The centers of each leaf being gold, bordered by dark green edges. Sun and an evenly moist, but well-drained site. Gallon $18.00
Forsythia Kumson Gorgeous golden spider web design/variegation on dark green leaves, give this variation on the old fashion Forsythia some real WoW impact! The foliage is so spectacular on it's own, I wouldn't care if it ever bloomed! This is a low growing, spreading shrub. The branches reach up quickly, only to arch and bend down to the ground, to keep forming newly rooted plants. GREAT choice to cover large areas, or keep in check with simple yearly pruning. Gallon $18.00
Geranium m. "Confetti" DRAMATIC tri-color foliage, Greens/whites/pinks randomly strewn about each leaf in a wild pattern, acting as the perfect canvas to highlight the small pink blossoms. This low growing variegated Geranium is a much stronger plant than the "Jester's Jacket" variety. Mamma comes back every year as well as seedlings true to the variegation. Excellent addition to the partially sunny bed, right up front!
This is such a striking plant, with it's white leaves and green veining. When in bloom, the foliage is dramatically highlighted by the abundant yellow blooms. A medium height plant that will steal the show no matter what it is surrounded by, in sun to partial shade.
Hemerocallis "Kwansa Variegata" This would be the common double Orange Ditch Lily, but with a twist! White bands of varying widths, running the length of it's long strappy leaves. Super foliage plant, with the added bonus of large double orange flowers in late Summer. An indestructible plant in sun and a well-draining soil. Gallon $15.00
Hiericium chocolate variegated This "Hawkweed" is one of the most "WoW" foliage specimens in the perennial garden. Fuzzy, heavily streaked, splashed and freckled with dark brown, you won't even care if the plant ever blooms. Always gets lots of attention from visitors, and seems everyone just has to feel the leaves to see if it's "real". Rare and choice
Kerria japonica variegata A VARIEGATED Kerria! This tough little shrub is such a valuable treasure in the garden. Not only for the oodles of cheery yellow blooms, it's hardiness and resistance to leaf burn or insects, but also for it's gorgeous variegated leaves that give such long lasting appeal throughout the entire season! Once established it will sucker out a bit, like a lilac. Only reaches about 4 feet in height. Likes sun to part shade and an evenly moist but not soggy, soil. Gallon Pot $18.00
Lychnis coronaria "Hutchinson's Cream"(OUT) A fabulous variegated form of one of Grandmas' Garden favorites! Soft fuzzy leaves with creamy streaks and splashes. Keep dead-headed to promote healthy new leaf growth. Rare and exquisite! 5" pot $15.00
Lunaria annua variegata (OUT) This lovely variegated form of the more common "Money Plant" is technically a self sowing Biennial. But once you let just one plant set and disperse seed, you will never be without them in your gardens. An elegant vision, with the white margins picking up the color of it's blooms, This sun to part shade perennial is a rare find.
Lysimachia punctata "Alexander" This variegated Yellow Loosetrife is very versatile in the garden. Can take anything from full sun to full shade. (But the more sun, the more moisture it requires in it's soil.) The Yellow border on each leaf really picks up the color of it's bright yellow blooms, making it one attractive focal point in the perennial border!
Mentha suaveolens variegata More fondly referred to as, "Variegated Pineapple Mint". Not only is this a stunning foliage plant, with it's soft, furry variegated leaves,....... But it also has a fabulous fragrance, AND it's useful as a plate garnish, flavoring for teas, cakes, lamb, or anything you like a bit of mint flavor added to. This is definitely a staple in my gardens, and I could never be without it! Sun and an evenly moist, well draining soil.
Nicandra physalodes "Old Paynt" (Available late Spring/early Summer) This is a self sowing annual. Very prolific! I've heard it called by two names, Nicandra p. "Splash of Cream" and Nicandra p. "Old Paynt". Regardless of what you want to name her, When the clear blue shallow bell blooms open up, the contrast between flower and variegated foliage are just a heavenly sight to behold. Seems to develop best variegation with just a bit of shade. Fabulous heirloom!
Parthenocissus v. variegata (LIMITED) Variegated Virginia creeper. A dramatic variation on our native, all green Virginia Creeper. This will look wonderful climbing up a tree or trellis, as well as making a lovely sea of variegation used as a ground-cover, Nowhere near as aggressive as it's green counterpart. 6" pot $10.00
Petasites japonicas variegata This giant leaf beauty is a bog plant., but does quite well in a moist shady spot, too. New leaves emerge with phenomenal variegation, and get to be about 2' across at maturity. As it heats up come Summer, the leaves will become more solid green. When Fall returns, so does the intense variegation. VERY easy plant to grow. And if you don't want it to take over your garden, best to use some kind of root containment system! Gallon $15.00
Phlox divaricata montrose tri-color (Easier to call it variegated woodland Phlox) This is a stunning, rare variegated form of our native Phlox divaricata. Same blue, fragrant blooms as the common Phlox divaricata, but intensely marked foliage in green/cream and pink. The more sun it gets, the more pink tones the leaves will take on. In deep shade it's only green & cream variegation.
Phytolacca americana variegata I guarantee you, there has never been a more spectacular weed than this breathtaking variegated Poke Weed! When it's bright red berry bracts mature in late Fall, it puts on quite a show. This one likes an evenly moist, but not wet soil, and partial sun. Gallon $15.00
Plantago asiatica "Ui Fu" It seems most are calling this "Plantago asiatica variegata" these days. Never-the-less, A wonderful white variegated form of the same weed, "Plantain". This variegated form has much smaller, paddle shaped leaves than the yellow variegated form, and is not quite as rare. Still, an awesome foliage plant for the front of a partially shaded bed.
Polygonatum odorata variegata A mature stand of this variegated Solomon's Seal is really a sight to behold in the Woodland Garden! It's crisp white tips give off such brilliance in a dark area, just lighting it up with drama and elegance. Forms a nice colony in only a couple of years. Very easy to grow in a rich, well draining soil, with full to partial shade.
Polygonum virginiana "Painter's Palette" Stunning foliage plant for full or partial shade. Bloom is irrelevant, only a slim stalk with hot pink little beads. What counts here, are those awesome cream splashed leaves, that adorn a shrub-like perennial reaching a height of about 2 feet and nearly the same in width.
Ranunculus ficaria "Buttered Popcorn" This variegated buttercup IS a spreader. Will quickly form a nice tight groundcover of the most delightful yellow and green patterned leaves, which when topped off with the yellow single petal bloom, is just to-die-for stunning! Likes it moist and sun to partial shade is best.
Salix integra "Hakuro Nishiki" A variegated willow with awesome design to each & every leaf! Very fast growing, and such an easy plant to make happy, with sun and a moist soil, it will get as large and full as you let it. If preference is to maintain it as a smaller and more bushy specimen, al one needs to do is keep it pruned. No better backdrop to highlight your sun loving perennial border! Gallon $10.00
Sanguisorba "Dali Marble" A lovely WHITE variegated Burnett! This one has a white margin, more of a uniform variegation than the yellow variegate. Same growth habit, getting quite large by end of the season, (about 3 feet tall X 2 feet wide on a mature plant), with thimble-like blooms. Loves a slightly damp acidic soil, with most of the day sun.
Sanguisorba o. "Lemon Splash" This yellow variegated Burnet is SUCH an awesome foliage plant! It only gets better, when this beauty gets loaded with dark burgundy thimbles (blooms), in late summer. The combination between leaf and bloom are breathtaking. Likes sun and a soil that doesn't dry out. (Not boggy, just moist)
Sasaella masamuneana albostriata A hardy Bamboo that only reaches about 6' at maturity and optimum conditions. The variegation on this gem is just spectacular. Most leaves will have bands of creamy yellow in varying widths, but some leaves will actually become pure white. Fabulous foliage accent in part sun. A warning; This is a running type Bamboo. In the Fall, If not contained by a root barrier,, It will begin to send out horizontal shoots. Easy to pull up, but can get a bit rambunctious if not kept in check. A very unusual and worthy plant for those of you in the North, wishing to try your hand at Bamboos.
Scuttellaria variegata Yes! A gorgeous VARIEGATED Scullcap! Not just the spikes of purpley-blue helmet-like flowers, but luscious yellow on green splotching and freckling. Awesome plant that is very easy to grow with EXCELLENT drainage and partial shade. $15.00
Solidago flexicaulis Variegata A YELLOW variegated Goldenrod! This is SUCH a beautiful foliage plant! Soft yellow banding, freckling and streaking on its leaves which really set the stage for the bright yellow blooms in summer. Don't let the word "Goldenrrod" make you squeemish! This one is VERY well behaved! The clump will about double in size each year, but never run rampant through the beds or be a "Bad Neighbor"!
Stachys sylvatica "Hoskin's Variegated" This member of the Lamb's Ear family is without a doubt THE most fabulous! It's soft, fuzzy leaves are splashed, streaked and freckled with cream at random, Typical tubular stachys blooms sit atop the striking leaves in late Summer, making this rarity one heck of a gorgeous plant! Will spread slowly to eventually form a groundcover.
Tomato variegata NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL LATE SPRING This is an extremely rare Tomato specie, (NOT a hybrid), that comes true from seed every time. Leaves are randomly splashed with white to varying degrees, and the variegation only intensifies with maturity. Yes. The fruit is also streaked with white when still at the green stage. When it completely ripens to dark red, there are no longer any signs of the white streaking on the fruit. As with all Tomato plants, requires full sun, but prefers it's soil a bit more on the dry side, and MUST have good air circulation. VERY rare addition to anyone's veggie garden! And don't forget to save at least one fruit for seed and next year's sowing!
Viola koreana "Syletta" This perennial Violet has the most spectacular foliage of any of it's relatives. It is a more delicate, petite plant than the more common Violas, with signifigantly smaller blooms and leaves, but will eventually self sow to form large patches of the fabulous silver patterning. Likes just a bit of sun and an evenly moist, but well draining soil.
Viola mandshurica "Fuji Dawn" Looking for a hardy violet with drop-dead-gorgeous foliage? This one can't be beat, for it's wildly splashed and freckled lance shaped leaves. Self sows freely, but not what I'd consider "invasive" Forms a nice little colony in a year or so. The variegation will fade during the hot Summer months, but returns again with Fall's cooler temperatures. Will take full to partial sun, and needs evenly moist but well draining soil.
Waldsteinia ternata "Mozaic" This variegated form of our "Barren Strawberry" is extremely rare! It is much slower growing than it's all green counterpart, but will eventually form a spectacular mat of it's creamy splashed leaves, to dazzle even the most unenthusiastic of garden visitors. MUST have a sharply draining soil, and just a bit of sun. *Very limited supply* 3" pot $15.00
