"The Great Frozen White Tundra" This is what we look like in the dead of Winter in good old Up-State NY. Such a devastating difference from the warmth and burgeoning life of the growing season.
Yes, Even I, Keeper of the gardens, can't resist taking a shot of my beauties in bloom, at a moments notice. So what if there's a party going on?! Priorities, I say!
Formal Rose Garden
Heliopsis and Asiatic Lilies
Lychnis coronaria and wild Yarrow
Small ornamental pond
A few houseplants on the porch
A row of Asiatic Lilies and friends, waiting for new homes
Another row of beauties at the sales area waiting to be adopted
A shade bed consisting predominantly of Natives. I always like to put a piece of "Garden Architecture" in the beds to add whimsy and interest. Here is an old grinding wheel for sharpening those dull old tools.
And,....What a coquette she is!
A shot of the long wall garden on left side of arbor.
Lower garden, previously shown with Heliopsis and red Asiatic Lilies, but a broadened view, catching the right side of the wall garden and front of the house plantings.
Cypripedium acaule, or "Pink Lady's Slipper" Orchid. This is truly one of our most precious Native treasures!
Cypripedium pubescens, or "Yellow Lady's Slipper" Orchid. I saved this precious beauty from near death at another nursery, believe it or not, and it has rewarded me every year with a whole new additional stalk, supporting an added new bloom every year since. This little Native has to be one of God's most amazing miracles.
One of my favorite combinations, Pulmonaria and a weeping, burgundy leaf Sedum.
Majestic Grecian Foxgloves line the walkway to the arbor of Yellow Trumpet Vine
A closer look at the Yellow Trumpet vine Arbor, now in bloom. (Even my nephew enjoys getting into the act!)
Still can't beat good old fashioned Garden Phlox and False Sunflower for color punch in late Summer!
A stand of Rodgersia fits right in perfectly in the woodland beds. Very dramatic foliage plant with impressive size and form.
And how much do my plants love the care and attention I give them? SO much, they go to great lengths to please me,....even if it means creating variegated family members, which they know will evoke squeals of joy from me. Seriously, the most rare woodlander I have on the property, here, going by the name of Variegated Skunk Cabbage!
One of my favorite views in the entire property. A small arrangement of some of my favorite Hostas, under a gorgeous red Crabapple Tree. The backround view ain't too shabby either.
The growing/holding/propagating beds for precious Woodlanders. All tucked away for Winter Slumber, and getting ready to put on a real show for Spring. Imagine all the Trillium beds bursting into bloom. Ahhhhh.
Cindy, (The baby), and Sierra, (Mamma), posing with their most complimentary angle. These two sweeties are 3rd generation Nubian/Pygmy cross and a couple of real characters!
"The Girls" Six of the best personalities you ever want to meet. Not just for their yummy eggs, but these Buff Orp.s are wonderful pets. Gardenin' Chickens. When loose about the yard, you'll never see them far away from me, if I'm turning up some dirt, exposing worms, bugs, and other delicacies.
And, the Grande Dam of the gardens,....."Minnie the Mouser", (or just plain, Minnie, as we call her.) Everything looking and smelling so clean and "new" after a good summer's rain.
And, what to do with a broken, leaking fountain? Turn it into a planter, of course!
Small pond at north end of cabin. This has really turned into "Joe's Pond", as he has been diligent about it's cleaning/maintenance and well being of it's inhabitants.
